Cardiac Calcium Scoring
To schedule a cardiac scoring test at any Lutheran Health Network hospital, call (833) 546-4968 and select option 2, then option 1.
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death in the United States. Cardiac calcium scoring - a simple, non-invasive CT scan of the heart – can calculate your risk of developing CAD. It could even identify heart disease if you aren’t presenting traditional symptoms and help save your life.
Who should consider a cardiac scoring scan?
If you are age 40 or older and have one or more of the following risk factors for heart disease, this test might be beneficial to you.
- Family history
- Diabetes
- High cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Overweight
- Stress
- Tobacco use
- Limited physical activity
This screening is not intended for those with documented coronary artery disease, although it may be useful in some circumstances under a physician’s guidance.
Is a referral needed?
A physician referral is not required, but patients are encouraged to talk with their primary care provider (PCP) before scheduling. The name of the PCP who will receive the scan results is required.
What to expect during the scan
- Cardiac calcium scoring is a quick, non-invasive CT scan.
- Patients remain clothed during the scan.
- Very low amounts of radiation are used.
- Fasting is not necessary, but patients should not consume caffeine for four hours prior to the scan.
