Nine Extraordinary Nurses Recognized with DAISY Award®
5/10/2023
Nine local nurses were recently recognized with the DAISY Award for going above and beyond in providing compassionate care. The following excerpts highlight the most recent DAISY Award recipient nominations:
Leigh Cox, R.N.
Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital
From a patient nomination: With this being my first pregnancy, I had no idea what to expect. Leigh was very patient and understanding the whole time. She was beyond helpful and knowledgeable trying to keep me calm and helping me through contractions. She was amazing. Even after the birth, she was exceptional and so helpful.
Jenna Katon, R.N.
Dupont Hospital
From a patient nomination: Jenna was my labor and delivery nurse. She was kind and compassionate. She explained everything to the best of her ability and kept me and my midwife team up-to-date. She wanted to know my birth plan from the start. And even though almost nothing went as planned, she did everything to make my birth experience meaningful and how I wanted it. She helped coach and encourage me through to the very end. I am so grateful for everything she did for me, my husband and most importantly our beautiful baby.
Teresa Ley, R.N.
Bluffton Regional Medical Center
From a patient nomination: Teresa was my pre-op nurse for two different procedures. Before the second procedure, we were going over my medical history and she recalled being my nurse the first time. I talked about all I’d been through and how it has been such a tough road. She held my hand and prayed for me. I will always remember the love and care she showed for me that day. It was such a comfort. I left feeling like I was more than just a patient.
Rachel Michael, R.N.
The Orthopedic Hospital
From a patient nomination: Rachel did an outstanding job explaining the process in a gentle, nurturing way. She had an excellent rapport and was very accommodating and extremely pleasant. It is always nice when a nurse has the skills and bedside manner to make everyone comfortable and confident in the care they are receiving. Rachel is an amazing nurse.
Milica Miliceviv, R.N.
Lutheran Hospital
From a colleague’s nomination: Milica has been a tremendous help to the team. She is kind and compassionate towards staff and patients. She connects and communicates with patients efficiently. And she inspires techs, new nurses and other staff throughout our unit. She always ensures her colleagues have the support, knowledge and skills necessary to perform their duties. Milica always goes above and beyond and gives the best care possible.
Sue Miller, R.N.
The Orthopedic Hospital
From a patient nomination: I had to spend the night for observation after a procedure. I had fantastic nurses and aides, but I kept getting cold even after receiving several warm blankets. Sue checked all my vitals, IV and chart, asking pertinent questions. She then asked if I wanted to try additional medications the doctor had prescribed that might help. Her knowledge helped me to stop waking up cold so I could rest. She knew just what I needed and was able to get me comfortable. A heartfelt thank you doesn’t seem like much, but it is from our hearts.
Yamin Nwe, R.N.
Lutheran Hospital
From a colleague’s nomination: Yamin demonstrates compassion day in and day out for all her young patients and their families. Her knowledge and quick thinking have helped save many patients. She goes above and beyond daily for her team as well as her patients. The Lutheran pediatric ER is lucky to have her!
Rachel Quillen, R.N.
Bluffton Regional Medical Center
From a patient nomination: I was scheduled for a procedure but wasn’t feeling well before it. Rachel was compassionate and caring, notifying the doctor of possible complications because of how I was feeling. Medications were provided so they could safely continue with the procedure, doing all they could to make the experience less stressful for me. Rachel was wonderful.
Ashley Tubbs, R.N.
The Rehabilitation Hospital
From patients’ nominations:
Ashley came to my room with medication and as we discussed my pain level, she suggested using a topical anesthetic. I have since stopped all my pain meds and have been pain-free for a week!
Ashley is a wonderful lady. She helped me succeed to improve in getting well. I wish I could do more than thank her for the support and wonderful care she provided throughout my stay at the Rehab Hospital.
The DAISY Foundation™ is a not-for-profit organization established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by members of his family. In late 1999, Patrick died at the age of 33 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique way of thanking those professionals for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and their families.
