Dukes Memorial Hospital was recognized with a Community Partnership Award recently for its work on the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program with the United Way of Miami County.
The Indiana Department of Health’s State Office of Rural Health presented the award to leadership from the hospital and the local United Way chapter, recognizing the more than decade-long partnership and its impact on literacy in the rural community.
“The Imagination Library has been a passion our organizations have shared since its inception,” said Deb Close, Dukes Memorial CEO. “To know that we are making such a difference in literacy in Miami County is just awesome.”
Since 2009, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program has provided more than 50,000 books to more than 600 children in Miami County through the partnership with the United Way of Miami County, Dukes Memorial Hospital and three community school corporations.
Babies born at Dukes Memorial Hospital and residing in Miami County are eligible for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program. Parents can register their child through the United Way of Miami County to receive one book a month sent to their address until they turn five years old.
“Reading regularly with your children during their preschool years gives them the most significant boost they can get toward a successful education,” said Debi Wallick, executive director for United Way of Miami County. “Our goal is for every child born at Dukes Memorial Hospital to develop and show improved growth in the social, emotional and cognitive skills needed to succeed.”
