Half A Century Of Healing: Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital Celebrates 50th Anniversary
5/12/2026
Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital (LKH) marks its 50th anniversary, celebrating five decades of clinical excellence and service to Kosciusko County. Originally opened in 1976 as Kosciusko Community Hospital, the facility has evolved from a rural community hospital into an advanced healthcare hub managing more than 268,000 patient encounters annually. Notably, the hospital’s Birthplace has welcomed more than 32,000 births since its inception.
According to its 2025 Community Benefit Report, LKH’s regional footprint extends far beyond clinical walls. The hospital contributed more than $133 million to the area through charity care, facility investments and employee payroll. This includes more than $10 million in local taxes supporting regional schools and civic infrastructure.
"While medical technology has evolved beyond what anyone could have imagined in 1976, our core mission remains exactly the same: to make the healthcare experience exceptional for our patients," said Chad Towner, chief executive officer of Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital. "Reaching our 50th anniversary is a testament to five decades of dedication to our neighbors. As we look ahead, we remain focused on innovating and serving alongside the community we call home."
Built for $6.5 million in 1976, the original facility established a critical healthcare foundation for the county. Over the years, the hospital adapted to regional demands and shifting healthcare models. While bed configurations changed over the decades to align precisely with modern inpatient utilization and state regulatory guidelines, the scope of care has vastly expanded.
LKH recently completed a $30 million modernization project. The expansion added 25,000 square feet to the campus, introducing a brand-new public entrance, updated surgical suites, expanded pre- and post-operative areas, and fully renovated patient rooms. Today, the hospital delivers surgical services, intensive care and 24-hour emergency care.
LKH enters its next half-century with an "A" Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group for Spring 2026. Additionally, LKH maintains specialized regional knowledge through its accredited Chest Pain Center, Primary Stroke Center certification, and fully accredited Sleep Disorder Center.
"For 50 years, this hospital has been anchored in the moments that matter most: births, recoveries and second chances," Towner added. "We are deeply grateful to the physicians, nurses, employees and volunteers who built this legacy. Tonight, we honor that history and recommit to the next 50 years of care."
As part of the 50th anniversary celebration, LKH is inviting community members, former employees, physicians, volunteers, patients and families to share memories, stories and photos from the hospital’s history. Selected submissions will be preserved in a time capsule honoring the legacy of Kosciusko Community Hospital and the future of Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital.
