7 Extraordinary Nurses Recognized with DAISY Award®
11/7/2023
Nine Lutheran Health Network nurses were recently recognized with the DAISY Award for going above and beyond in providing compassionate care. The following excerpts highlight the most recent DAISY Award recipient nominations:
Kerri Taylor, RN
Dukes Memorial Hospital
From a colleague nomination: Kerri stepped in and helped me with a patient that needed extra support even though it was not her assignment. She also reached out to the patient’s family and helped them figure out a way to see their loved one quickly. Kerri identified a need, stepped out of her role, and worked diligently to ensure a positive outcome for the patient.
Kimberly Westgerdes, RN
Bluffton Regional Medical Center
From a patient nomination: Kim was very caring. She was upfront with information and did her job to the fullest. She took time out for me even though she had other patients to talk to and take care of. She was compassionate and caring and went above and beyond.
Josh Brown, RN
Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital
From a patient nomination: A loved one was fortunate to have Josh as a nurse. During our time at the hospital Josh checked in on us often, even though he was responsible for other patients. When it was time to go home, Josh was there to wish us well. He went above and beyond to show that he cared about every aspect of care. He was patient, gentle, kind and knowledgeable.
Carrie Robinson, RN
Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital
From patient nominations: Carrie was my nurse and was kind and listened to my concerns. She took plenty of time to explain things to me and answer my questions. She made me feel like I was part of her family. She treated me like a person, not just a patient to see if I was in pain or needed anything. She was very much appreciated and deserves to be recognized.
Freeda Shepherd, RN
Dupont Hospital
From a colleague nomination: When Freda followed up on a patient who was discharged, she learned that the patient was in need of education and supplies to address her condition at home. After work Freda went to the patients’ home and delivered the needed supplies. She went above and beyond.
Danielle Steffen, RN and Katy Haiflich, RN
The Orthopedic Hospital
From a patient nomination: These nurses were very professional and made us very comfortable about what they were doing and why. They went above and beyond in their treatment. When there was a medical emergency, they jumped right into action, made the necessary calls, and explained calmly what was happening and why. They made us feel very safe and under great care at all times.
The DAISY Foundation™ is a not-for-profit organization established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by members of his family. In late 1999, Patrick died at the age of 33 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique way of thanking those professionals for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and their families.
