Extraordinary Nurses Recognized with DAISY Award®
6/6/2022
Lutheran Health Network is proud to recognize six nurses with the DAISY Award for going above and beyond in providing compassionate care. The following excerpts highlight the most recent DAISY Award recipient nominations:
Amy Archbold, RN
Bluffton Regional Medical Center
From a colleague’s nomination: “During an intense and stressful situation with a patient, Amy cared for the patient, calmly explained the tasks she was performing and educated the patient on why the care was necessary. The situation was stressful, and in the center of it was a nurse calmly caring for her patient and making sure the patient was safe. Amy was a role model of what nurses truly are – the patient’s advocate.”
Jami Arnold, RN
Lutheran Hospital
From a colleague’s nomination: “When Jami discovered that a dying patient’s family member was without food or other necessities at home, she went to work gathering contributions from co-workers, had the individual create a shopping list and arranged for groceries to be delivered to their home. Jami’s sacrifice of her own time and resources to help the family in their time of need is an example of her true compassion. Though these situations can be common in her unit, Jami’s empathy and kindness has never wavered, and she goes above and beyond the call of duty to care not just for the patients but their families as well.”
Jennifer Fitzgerald, RN
The Orthopedic Hospital
From a patient’s nomination: “Jen was my RN. She was very sweet and understanding of my concerns about using pain medication following my surgery. She helped me to understand the different medications, encouraged me to use good judgment when it came to my pain and really helped me through a rough time. I felt safe because of the knowledge she gave me.”
Lisa Fletter, RN
Dupont Hospital
From a patient’s nomination: “Lisa saved my life. I came to Dupont with COVID and ended up on a ventilator. A week later when I was aware enough to know what was going on, Lisa made me feel like I mattered. Whatever I needed she was there to take care of my needs. Because of her positive attitude and the care she showed, it gave me hope and uplifted my spirits. I cannot thank her enough.”
Heidi Martin, RN
Kosciusko Community Hospital
From a patient’s nomination: “What a wonderful nurse and human being! Heidi was my nurse two out of the six days I was hospitalized. What an impact she made. Beyond her duties as a nurse, she was very personable, loving and caring. She sat just to chat with me, and made me feel so good. On the third night when she wasn’t assigned to my room, she still stopped in to see me anyway. What a great lady and nurse! KCH should treasure this asset.”
Nurse Leader DAISY Award Recipient
Cathaline Chisholm, RN
Lutheran Hospital
From colleagues’ nominations: “Cathaline is a strong leader committed to her staff and her patients. In the years she has been the manager, her unit has undergone many changes. Through each one, Cathaline has been a steady, supportive leader. Her staff knows she will always answer her phone, respond to their emails and leave her office door open – greeting them with chocolate and a smile. She has created an environment where trust, compassion, mutual respect and continued professional development are modeled and supported. She comes in on her days off to meet with her weekend and night shift staff and make sure they have all they need for success. She has even been known to cancel her own weekend plans if she knows her staff needs her at the hospital. Cathaline is an exemplary unit manager very much deserving of the DAISY Nurse Leader Award.”
The DAISY Foundation™ is a not-for-profit organization established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by members of his family. In late 1999, Patrick died at the age of 33 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique way of thanking those professionals for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and their families.
Patients, families and colleagues may nominate nurses for this award from any Lutheran Health Network hospital, RediMed or MedStat urgent care clinic or Lutheran Health Physicians practice.
