Groundbreaking Ceremony Ushers in Next Phase of Lutheran Downtown Hospital Project

Behind 18 ceremonial shovels stood a large, diverse group gathered together in the parking lot next to St. Joseph Hospital with one primary focus: to look forward. Joining representatives of Lutheran Health Network at the Lutheran Downtown Hospital groundbreaking ceremony on July 17 were elected officials, community leaders and other valued guests, all there to help celebrate a milestone that will, by early 2022, result in a new hospital in the heart of downtown.

Addressing a crowd of more than 250 guests, Lutheran Health Network Regional President and CEO Mark Medley highlighted the significance of this development for downtown Fort Wayne and LHN as being a time to look forward and deliver on the commitment of providing high-quality healthcare for every patient. Medley was one of several selected speakers in addition to SJ/LDH CEO Jake Golich and Fort Wayne mayor Tom Henry, who touched on the positive momentum and investment this project will provide to the overall health of the city, as well as the long-term success of the downtown revitalization.

The ceremony, which also served as an opportunity to honor SJ and its extensive century-and-a-half legacy within the community, included representatives from the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ; city and county government; the medical staff and board of SJ; the West Central Neighborhood Association and Trinity English Lutheran Church.
