New grade for spring 2024 is a national recognition for patient safety
Fort Wayne, IN – Dupont Hospital, part of Lutheran Health Network (LHN), earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national organization and advocate for patient safety. Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as the systems hospitals have put in place to prevent them.
“Patient safety is our primary focus as well as patient satisfaction. We start each day with a team discussion around prevention of potential safety issues. Prioritization of safety is embraced hospital-wide,” said Michelle Law, R.N., BSN, chief quality officer of Dupont Hospital.
“The Dupont Hospital team has focused on improved communication through leadership rounding, bedside shift reports and accountability for foundational safety practices such as bar code medication administration and hand hygiene. We will continue to strive for excellence through our commitment to continuous improvement. We challenge ourselves to deliver safe, quality, compassionate and connected care with the best possible experience to every patient, every time,” Law said.
“Everyone who works at Dupont Hospital should be proud of this ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It takes complete dedication at every level, and an ironclad commitment to putting patients first. I thank Dupont Hospital, its leadership, clinicians, staff, and volunteers for caring so deeply for its patients and their safety.”
The Leapfrog Group graded other LHN hospitals as follows: Lutheran Hospital - B; Bluffton Regional Medical Center - B; and Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital - C. A safety grade was not given to Lutheran Downtown Hospital. One measure reported to Leapfrog Group is healthcare acquired infections. Lutheran Downtown Hospital has had zero healthcare acquired infections in over two years. Because of this, the statistical measurement does not allow for a score to be computed if the rate is zero.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program focused exclusively on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that harm patients. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
