RediMed Streamlines Pharmacy Visits with On-Site Medication Dispensing Machines

FORT WAYNE, IND. (Thursday, April 19, 2008) — RediMed patients will have a choice of going to the pharmacy to fill their prescriptions or filling them on-site, on their way out of the clinic.

Three RediMed urgent care clinics in Fort Wayne and one in Huntington now offer the InstyMeds™ Dispensing Machine, a cutting-edge technology that conveniently, accurately and safely delivers prescription medications inside RediMed clinics.

RediMed clinics are the first in the area and only second in the state to offer this convenient full-service approach to urgent care.

The machine is stocked with about 74 different types of medications, those most commonly prescribed at RediMed. Some over-the-counter pain, cough and fever medications are available to add to the patient's convenience. Patients can pay their co-pay with a credit or debit card. RediMed patients will have access to InstyMeds™ machine only at the time of their visit, and refills are not an InstyMeds™ option.

"It enhances our service in that patients who come to us are usually feeling ill and want to make as few stops as possible so they can get home more quickly," said Dr. Stephen Ross, medical director for RediMed. "No one wants to wait, especially when you don't feel well. We're finding that patients appreciate the added bonus of having easy access to over-the-counter pain, cough and fever medications to further streamline their visit."

A clinician uses a Web-based application to record the patient's prescription information after the exam. The patient, whose prescription coverage was preapproved at registration via the patient's drug benefits card, is asked if he or she wants to pick up the prescription at a drug store or obtain it through the dispensing machine in the clinic.

If the patient prefers InstyMeds™, the physician selects this option in the computer, which prompts the computer to assign a unique numerical identifier to that prescription. The patient then enters the code into the machine. Within two minutes, the machine selects the appropriate prepackaged medication, scans it three times for verification and releases it to the patient. A nurse reviews instructions and precautions with the patient for each medication dispensed.

A phone located on the dispenser will automatically connect the patient with an InstyMeds™ pharmacist or a billing technician if there are prescription, co-pay or insurance questions.
