Six Lutheran Health Network Hospitals Make The Joint Commission’s ‘Top Performer’ List
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Oct. 30, 2013) – Six Lutheran Health Network hospitals today were named a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of healthcare organizations in America. Bluffton Regional Medical Center, Dukes Memorial Hospital (Peru), Dupont Hospital (Fort Wayne), Lutheran Hospital (Fort Wayne), Kosciusko Community Hospital (Warsaw) and The Orthopedic Hospital of Lutheran Health Network (Fort Wayne) were all recognized by The Joint Commission for exemplary performance in using evidence-based clinical processes that are shown to improve care for certain conditions. Those conditions include heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, stroke and venous thromboembolism, as well as inpatient psychiatric services.
The LHN facilities that were recognized are six of only 1,099 U.S. hospitals earning the distinction of Top Performer on Key Quality Measures for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance. The ratings are based on an aggregation of accountability measure data reported to The Joint Commission during the 2012 calendar year. The list of Top Performer organizations represents just 33 percent of all Joint Commission-accredited hospitals reporting accountability measure performance data for 2012.
“Lutheran Health Network’s first priority is providing patients with high-quality, safe and effective care through proven practices that enhance outcomes and the patient experience,” said Brian Bauer, interim chief executive officer, Lutheran Health Network. “The credit goes to our medical staffs, employees and volunteers whose hard work every day makes this possible. It’s an honor to have the standard of care we provide throughout the region recognized on a national level.”
Each recognized LHN facility met specific thresholds for these key quality measures:
• Bluffton Regional Medical Center* Pneumonia and Surgical Care
• Dukes Memorial Hospital* Pneumonia
• Dupont Hospital* Pneumonia and Surgical Care
• Kosciusko Community Hospital Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Pneumonia and Surgical Care
• Lutheran Hospital Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Pneumonia and Surgical Care
• The Orthopedic Hospital* Surgical Care
*LHN facilities recognized for the same key quality measures each of the three years the program has been in existence.
“These Lutheran Health Network facilities and all the Top Performer hospitals have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to quality improvement and they should be proud of their achievement,” says Mark R. Chassin, MD, FACP, MPP, MPH, president and chief executive officer, The Joint Commission. “We have much to celebrate this year. Nearly half of our accredited hospitals have attained or nearly attained the Top Performer distinction. This truly shows that we are approaching a tipping point in hospital quality performance that will directly contribute to better health outcomes for patients.”
Each of the hospitals named Top Performers met three 95 percent performance thresholds. First, the hospital achieved cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures. Second, recognized hospitals reached performance of 95 percent or above on each and every reported accountability measure where there were at least 30 denominator cases. Third, hospitals must have had at least one core measure set that exhibited a composite rate of 95 percent or above, and within that measure set all applicable individual accountability measures had a performance rate of 95 or above.
A 95 percent score means a hospital provided an evidence-based practice 95 times out of 100 opportunities to provide the practice. Each accountability measure represents an evidence-based practice – for example, giving aspirin at arrival for heart attack patients, giving antibiotics one hour before surgery, and providing a home management plan for children with asthma.
In addition to being included in today’s release of The Joint Commission’s “Improving America’s Hospitals” annual report, each hospital will be recognized on The Joint Commission’s Quality Check website Qualitycheck.org .
